about

Sonnet #4 of 24 from Saturday Night Sonnets (2007)
Written as a heavyweight tribute to my dear friends who, like me survived the madness of drugs & alcohol to find the real joys of love & sobriety

lyrics

Done died too many times to die again
so the guardian angels have declared
a ghost of a go between mice and men
that easy cat’s eight gets spent unprepared
Many days of heaven way far from nice
a beautiful youth was paid for in spades
with reckless abandon we threw the dice
playing king and queen of the masquerades
Look back but don’t laugh at the luck of the draw
them narrow escapes were deaths all their own
nature will rule with unbreakable law
our time and place is written in stone

When we see each other we’re sure to smile
We may have skipped grace but always had style
